County commissioner announces groundbreaking for revitalization project in Soulsville

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Soulsville is getting a makeover after the groundbreaking to kick off construction for a new revitalization project takes place Friday afternoon.

Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery says Memphis native Derrick Craig plans to take the old Three Bay strip mall on East McLemore Avenue and turn it into the new home of Johnnie Mae’s Soul Cafe. There’s potential for a coffee and ice cream shop as well that will be open to students of Lemoyne-Owen College and other young adults in the area.

“This comes on the back of an announcement recently made of a proposed TIF in the South Memphis area that will spur additional redevelopment and help promote businesses to thrive and relocate to this region,” said Lowery.
