Torrey Harris becomes youngest state lawmaker to win US House District 90

Torrey Harris on race for district 90

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - One of the most-watched Tennessee House races has come to an end naming Democratic candidate Torrey Harris as the representative for Tennessee’s 90th district.

The win makes 29-year-old Harris the youngest state lawmaker in Nashville who is also openly gay.

Harris will take the seat from incumbent John Deberry who represented the district for 26 years before he was kicked out of the Tennessee Democratic Party and removed from the ballot. He currently has 79% of the vote

“I’m just very excited that we finally have a representative in the state of Tennessee for district 90 who’s going to listen, in power and serve not just some of district 90, but all of the Tennesseans. We’ve worked very hard,” said Harris. "We’ve run an amazing race. In 2018 and this year in this race as well. "

About two weeks ahead of the election, Harris told WMC Action News 5 DeBerry’s views are out of step with the people he’s supposed to represent.

“We’ve knocked on thousands of doors, made thousands of phone calls and gotten an opportunity to talk to the voters and know what it is they care about and know they have somebody who is going to get up there and represent them fully and not just some people,” he said.

Harris says he’s pushing for criminal justice reform, healthcare and public education.
