TRUMANN, Ark. (KAIT) - A Trumann teen will be ringing in the New Year with a new last name, after a surprise adoption by his father.
On Wednesday night, Derek Hisaw surprised his son, Kian, with the gift of a lifetime, officially making him a Hisaw.
Derek has been part of Kian’s life since he was 3-years-old.
His wife, Niena, said Derek is really the only father Kian has known.
“He’s been in my life for a long time now,” said Kian. “He was there for me my whole entire life. Like I had a surgery a couple years ago, he was there for me.”
Derek has already adopted one of Kian’s sisters, and the family had talked about Derek adopting Kian several times.
“He’s been their dad their entire lives, so to have his last name means that much more to them,” said Niena.
Niena left the choice of changing his last name to Kian, something he made an official decision on not long ago.
Once Kian made his choice, the family decided to make the official adoption a surprise.
“We figured what better way than Christmas, New Year’s and his birthday coming up to do it,” said Derek.
Kian thought his family was celebrating his birthday early, when he was given a note and his new birth certificate.
“I pulled out the birth certificate and read my name and it just shocked me because it felt like it was about to change my whole life,” said Kian.
Niena said sharing a last name is important to her kids.
“For them, they just feel more like a family, like accepted,” said Niena.
Derek said while the adoption is now official, Kian has always been a Hisaw.
“It’s awesome. He’s my kid, you know, I mean no matter what. I’ve had him since he was 3 so he’s my kid. He’s my son,” said Derek.
A feeling Kian agrees with.
“He’s my father and I wouldn’t change that for anything,” said Kian.
Derek is currently in the process of adopting Kian’s second sister.
They hope to have her adoption finalized within the next month, making all three kids officially Hisaws.
