TENNESSEE (WMC/WSMV) - A new report Thursday morning showed there have been 16,554 new unemployment claims filed in the state of Tennessee last week, bringing the total number to 980,983 since March 15, 2020, according to the TN Department of Labor and Workforce.
The recent spike in unemployment claims is the highest reported since the end of July.
Tennessee reported that 67,727 claims have been paid and the payments totaled $22,239,826.

Nationwide, the number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell slightly to 787,000, evidence of a job market stumbling in the face of the viral pandemic and the damage it has inflicted on the economy for nearly 10 months.
