Memphis police: Person wounded by officer after firing shots during traffic stop

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Police say one person is in the hospital after shots were fired during a traffic stop.

According to Memphis police, a suspect fired shots at an on-duty police officer and the officer returned fire.

The incident happened Tuesday around 7:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of Summer Avenue.

Memphis police say the officer was approaching the suspect’s car when shots were fired.

The officer fired back as the driver took off. Police say the suspect also fired shots at another car. No one in that car is hurt.

The suspected gunman showed up to the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound an hour later.

Memphis police say another person inside the car has been detained.

The officer involved was not injured. The officer has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the case.
