In an interview with the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, Pro-Publica and Investigate TV, Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Pelicia Hall spoke about conditions in state-run prisons. Hall said low pay is contributing to staffing shortages in those facilities.
Police say 28-year-old Antwan Campbell was shot and killed Villages of Harrison Creek Apartments near Jackson and National Tuesday evening. Investigators initially said the man who shot Campbell was a security guard but the apartment complex has not confirmed that he was an employee.
Timothy Saunders is indicted for the workplace shooting death of Thomas Hartman in May. Saunders, a truck driver, is accused of killing Hartman, a dock manager at a Memphis furniture store, after arguing over the unloaded truck.
The affidavit says Thomas McVicker sent his friend a message Aug. 9 that read, “I was thinking about shooting a church up but I’m afraid how it will affect my family in the flesh when I’m gone. So I think I’m going to kill some people on the street then get away with it then kill myself.”
Officers responded to the scene of the shooting around 10 p.m. on the 3000 block of Park Avenue where a witness told officers the suspects allegedly arrived at the lounge in a stolen vehicle just before the shooting.
According to the Memphis Police Department’s Facebook post, while the victim was at the check out counter one of the suspects took their wallet. Surveillance video shows the suspects walking through store.
