NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WMC-TV) - A one-year-old girl in New Albany was mauled to death Thursday night by her longtime babysitter's pit bull.
Destiny Knox was attacked when the dog, normally kept chained, somehow got loose and ran inside the house.
"They said when the police arrived, the dog still had the little girl. So, they had to shoot the dog," said family friend Janet Ferrell.
Authorities rushed the child to an area hospital, but she was dead on arrival.
The babysitter's family told Action News 5 that she loved Destiny as if she were her own child.
"And I know, she loves kids, and I know this is something she wouldn't have never dreamed of," Ferrell said.
Destiny Knox's body has been sent to Jackson, Mississippi, for an autopsy.
The District Attorney in Union County will determine if any charges will be filed.
Authorities say the issue of pit bulls running loose in the county has been an ongoing problem.
