HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - Lawmakers in Mississippi are trying to set an example of physical fitness by cutting the fat in their diets as they cut the fat in the state's budget.

Lawmakers, including Republican senator Doug Davis of Hernando, spent time in fitness program operated by former NFL player Paul Lacoste.

"He has a health and fitness program he operates in Jackson and he offered his program to the members of the legislature," Davis said.

The program lasted 12 weeks and while not all members of the body did not participate, quite a few did and the results were quite impressive.

"Of the 174 members, we had over 70 to participate, and thru the program those 70 members ended up losing over 1,300 pounds," Davis said.

The success of the program has garnered the attention of the national news media.Davis lost 17 pounds in the process, and is still working out daily. Davis hopes the program will hopefully send a positive message to those who may need a bit of inspiration.

"You need to take care of your body, and we need to exercise and back away from the table at appropriate times but also get in shape," he said.

Many lawmakers have vowed to continue the pursuit of physical fitness even after the program's conclusion.
