SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Gibbs Cove, Booneville Drive and Southaven Circle West have two things in common. They are all located on the West side of the City of Southaven in the Colonial Hills subdivision.  And according to Southaven Police Assistant Chief Steve Pirtle, they are among the streets where a string of auto burglaries happened early Monday morning.

"Two of the vehicles were forcibly broken into where the door was pried open, but the remainder were strictly unlocked," Pirtle said.

A total of 15 break-ins were spread out over a nine street area near the Southaven Circle. Stolen items include GPS systems, CD's and tools.

Resident Mark Henry said neighbors usually keep a watchful eye for crimes of this nature, but the recent break-ins caught him off guard.

"I was really surprised that it happened, that many cars in that short a time in this neighborhood," he said.

Henry said since the break-ins, the neighborhood's environment has changed, and people are paying more attention and being more vigilant.

"So we've got kinda the really old and then the really young, and I guess the older people are the ones that are probably still too trusting," he said.

According to Pirtle, auto burglaries are usually the top crimes in Southaven, with 335 reported in 2009.  Pirtle said the best thing you can do to prevent becoming a victim is to keep your doors locked and your valuables out of sight.
