MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former Memphis police officer has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend two years ago.

A jury convicted Chancy Jones of second-degree murder in June. He was sentenced Friday to one year short of the maximum time.

Jones had testified that he shot Phyllis Malone in September 2008 at a gas station near Interstate 40 because he thought she was going to run over him with her car.

Prosecutors said Jones shot Malone after she told him she was pregnant and was threatening to tell his wife about their affair if he did not give her money. Malone was not pregnant.

Jones was fired after the incident.
