(WMC-TV) - Police are investigating the death of an elderly man who died after a fight Wednesday at a Memphis nursing home.
Police were called to Spring Gate Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center early Wednesday morning after a fight between two elderly patients - Willie Mayfield, 89, and his new roommate.
"Blood was on the walls, they did say that," said Mayfield's daughter, Mary Charm. "From what I was told he got in a fight with his roommate, and he was dragging the roommate out into the hallway."
Nursing home staffers broke up the fight, but within 15 minutes, Mayfield died.
"It could've been too much excitement on him," Charm said.
Charm said her father suffered with Alzheimer's, which sometimes caused aggression. Still, she couldn't understand what happened Wednesday morning.
"I don't know what could have provoked the fight," she said. "I don't have any idea."
But Charm had questions, namely, how was a situation allowed to escalate into a fight between two elderly patients?
"Somebody should have known that it was getting to this place before it came to this," she said.
Mayfield's 84-year-old roommate, who has not been named, was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
Meanwhile, the nursing home declined comment. The law requires the facility to report unusual circumstances to the Tennessee Health Department. State officials say they're anxiously awaiting further details on the incident so they can decide on an appropriate next step and if they need to open their own investigation.
