Two teens in critical condition after being shot near University of Memphis

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police are looking for the gunman in a Tuesday night double shooting that left two people, including a 16 year old boy, in critical condition.

This happened near Spottswood and Minor, near the University of Memphis.

According to Memphis police, the situation began just after 9:45 Tuesday night, when they found an 18 year old and a 16 year old boy shot. Sources say the younger teen was shot in the neck.

The cause is still under investigation, but there are two witnesses to the shooting. One saw the shooting and the other heard the gunshots. Detectives don't have much information about the suspect and no one is in custody.

People who live the area say their neighborhood needs a bigger police presence.

According to neighbor Zach Gilliam, "Lately we've heard multiple gunshots around the area. Doesn't make you feel too safe. The presence of police you don't see 'em as much as we'd like to. We'd like to see a lot more of 'em around the area."

Another neighbor says he won't take any more chances with his safety.

Hunter Reid said, "I used to keep my shotgun not loaded with the shells beside it. But I kind of feel like I should keep it loaded now just in case someone tries to come in."

Authorities say both teenage victims were taken to the Med in critical condition.
