(WMC-TV) - The idea to close a number of schools in Memphis is a hot button issue right now. At a special session Thursday night, 38 out of 39 recommendations, developed by the Transition Planning Commission (TPC), were discussed.
That is according to the Commercial Appeal
The TPC allegedly recommends closing 20 schools in southwest and northwest Memphis. The move is calculated to raise about $ 20 million for investments and utilization rates for the new unified district.
The newspaper reports Thursday night, board members decided the issue would raise a number of questions, and it would require a separate meeting to address.
The administration will hold hearings to collect your input before finalizing a school closure list.
All recommendations approved last night will likely be seen again as the budget process for the merger moves forward.
Also, some underutilized schools could go to the Achievement School District (ASD), so they may not close.
We will keep you posted as this story unfolds.
