(WMC-TV) - Memphis police found a man dead in the street in South Memphis Wednesday night, according to officials.
A call came into police regarding a man who appeared to be injured and leaning on the side of his vehicle at Pond Street and Lucy Avenue. Once officers arrived on the scene, the victim was found dead.
Police are working the case as a murder. They say 32-year-old Harold Whiting was fatally shot and fell out of his car.
"I live right next to the field here. It happened right at the end of the field," said South Memphis resident Ester Tucker.
Tucker lives next door to where the man stumbled out of his car, bleeding.
"He got shot as far as I know. I don't know if someone was trying to rob him. It was a sad scene," said Tucker.
Police say a Fiat 500 ran off the road into a vacant lot Wednesday night.
"I'm in the bed. I hear gunshots right here in the alley. So it'll wake you up," said resident Horace Alexander. "I've been here about three years. I haven't had too many problems, but I hear a lot of gunshots in the neighborhood."
For all the gunshots Alexander has heard over the years, he says Wednesday night was all quiet.
No one in custody at this point. Police ask anyone with any information that might help solve this case to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
