(WMC) - Two people were killed in a mobile home fire in Panola County early Friday morning.

The fire broke out on Dawn Cove, near Shiloh Road, which is between Courtland and Batesville, Miss.

Four people were inside the home at the time. Two women made it out of the home safely. One man made it out, too, but ran back in to help another man. Both of them ended up dying in the fire.

Jonathan French lives next door. He woke up around 12:45 a.m. when his friend's house caught on fire.

"The house was pretty much involved, fully involved when I got there," he said. "Lifelong friends of ours."

French is also a volunteer firefighter for Courtland, Miss. He watched helplessly as flames destroyed his friend's home before fire crews arrived.

"It was hard, especially once it started making an interior attack on the house," added French. "Jeff died a hero."

It was his friend, Jeff, who lived at the mobile home; he worked quickly to save the three other people inside.

"Jeff got out of the house and also got the other two ladies that were in the house out, and he got the water hose and went back in," explained French.

But the flames were too much for Jeff and his friend.

"He tried to save the other man's life," said Courtland Fire Chief Michael Purdy. "Took us about an hour to get it under control."

"He had the courage to go back in and try to save a friend of his life and to me, that's a hero," said French, who feels bad he couldn't have done more to help. "Kind of guilty in a way."

The names of the victims have not yet been released.
