(WMC) - A Memphis mother is heartbroken Wednesday after she says a local funeral home lost her baby's remains.

Attorney James Sanders represents a mother grieving twice over.

"Distraught would be an understatement," said Sanders. "She has good days and not so good days and she's had mostly not so good days."

Her infant, born at Le Bonheur three months premature and died within two hours. The mom hired M. J. Edwards funeral home to handle services scheduled for September 5.

"On the eve of the funeral, she gets a call indicating that you need to come in," noted Sanders. "And they simply say 'Well we're sorry to report this but we can't find the body.'"

Sanders says logs show M. J. Edwards collected the body from the hospital, but they are unable to account for it as of Wednesday.

Sanders added, "The reality is they haven't given us any clear explanation as to what occurred."

WMC Action News 5 called the funeral home but was directed to a media line where a spokesperson gave the following statement:

"Out of respect for the privacy of all the families that we serve, it would be inappropriate for me to share specific details of any situation ... We're going to maintain a bond of confidentiality with this family."

Sanders says though the complaint has not yet been finalized, the mom plans on filing suit soon. It will likely be filed within a matter of weeks.

"Funerals are for a reason. It's for us to begin the process of wrapping up, focusing on a particular point in time, after which we can move on. She can't even do that," Sanders said.
