(WMC) - Memphis is home to the best barbecue in the world, and now the Bluff City is receiving recognition for its fried chicken.
The Daily Meal has named a Memphis-based restaurant as the best chicken spot in America. Rave reviews were shared by the foodie site for Gus's Fried Chicken.
Fried chicken is considered a simple American dish, but getting it just right every time is what makes Gus's Fried Chicken so special.
People from around the country come to see what all the fuss is about.
"I started as a faithful customer of Gus's in Mason Tennessee probably 16 or 17 years ago," owner Wendy McCrory.
McCrory bought the franchise two and a half years ago with a commitment to stay true to its founder.
"And we don't serve anything here that I wouldn't serve to my 5-and-a-half-year-old daughter," she said.
The guys at Gus's aren't just winging it. What's unique about Gus's Fried Chicken is the batter, which is a secret recipe that's been handed down and maintained for about 40 years."
"We keep the batter under lock and key," McCrory said.
And the birds aren't battered until you place your order.
GQ magazine once called Gus's the best place to fly in just to have lunch.
"One of the highest honors I think that we ever had was Samuel Jackson was on ESPN, and they asked what he liked about Memphis, and he said he loved coming into Gus's Fried Chicken," McCrory said.
There are stores already in Oxford, Little Rock, Nashville, and Austin. Stores are opening in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, and Chicago.
