MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - An on-duty Jackson police officer was attacked and seriously injured Sunday evening in a gas station parking lot.
Sgt. Mike Thomas, a 26-year veteran of the Jackson Police Department, was getting out of his patrol car in the Exxon parking lot near Carriage House Drive and North Highland Avenue when has was approached by a woman asking for help.
Thomas was then attacked by a man who was with the woman. The man knocked Thomas to the ground and continued to beat and kick him.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Cepeda L. Coble, ran away from the scene but was found a short time later near the entrance to North Plaza.
He resisted other officers' attempts to arrest him, at which point officers used a Taser to take him into custody.
Sgt. Thomas was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Investigators found the woman who asked Thomas for help is the mother of the suspect, and they had been in a fight in the parking lot before Thomas's arrival.
"This is one of the most violent assaults on a police officer that I have seen in my 19 years in law enforcement," said Interim Police Chief Julian Wiser in a written statement. "It will take several months for Sgt. Thomas to recover from this assault."
This investigation is ongoing.
