MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man is wanted for stealing thousands of dollars of checks from United States Postal Service drop mailboxes. He was caught on surveillance video and now a warrant is out for his arrest.
Darrell Sargent is seen in several undercover videos captured by the U.S Postal Inspection Service.
In the video, Sargent can been seen sticking his arm inside of drop mailboxes and taking stacks of mail out.
U.S. Postal Inspector Susan Link says Sargent can be linked to mail fraud at three Memphis locations, including the Mallory Office, Whitehaven Office, and East Finance Office.
There is a federal indictment and warrant out for Sargent, including a $500 reward for his capture, but he is hard to catch.
"He is very mobile, moves a lot, and is paranoid," says Link.
Link says since they have spotted the scheme, security measures have been taken to make sure the mail is secure.
In total, officials estimated he has stolen close to $13,000 in just two years.
"I use it pretty frequently," says Courtney Carter, whose hair salon sits across the street from one of the locations Sargent has been seen stealing mail.
"It's being stopped and you don't know how that is affecting the person who is getting their mail stolen from them," Carter added.
Link says the best way to ensure the safety of your mail it's best to drop off your mail inside the post office.
