MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 53-year-old woman was shot and killed inside her home in South Memphis on Wednesday morning.
The family of Vicky McGee, 53, says she was a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to everyone she met.
"That's my mom, man, and she's going to be missed," said the victim's son, Jerry Ross.
Witnesses say she was not the intended target.
"She didn't have nothing to do with the situation," said the victim's friend Hugh Briggs. "Some other dude ran up into her apartment running from some dude who was shooting at him."
Witnesses explained that a man, who robbed a home nearby, ran to McGee's house as a safe haven. Because she knew him, she opened the door.
The man who was chasing him then shot through McGee's window, striking her. There are bullet holes in her living room window.
"I know it was an accident but you can't just be shooting all willy-nilly in people houses," said Ross.
When police arrived, they found McGee dead. The man who ran into her home was gone, but it's not clear how long he was in her home before police got there.
"You can't be friendly to everyone, and this is a prime example right here," Ross added.
McGee's father says his daughter sometimes hung with the wrong crowd, and people often came over to smoke.
"I'm told that's where they go and do their stuff, you know," said McGee's father, MJ McGee.
