MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Witnesses say a man accidentally shot himself Wednesday.
The shooting happened near Douglass Park on Ash Street.
Paramedics took the victim to Regional One in non-critical condition.
"I heard a gunshot went off. I was just splashing with my friends, you know, chilling, trying to get out of the sun," said Joshua Allen, who was in the pool nearby.
People at Douglass Park say there were about 20 people in the pool when they heard gunshots somewhere near the pool.
Douglass Park is a popular place for people to come to play basketball, swim and for young children to play on the playground. It is a place most of them considered safe.
"You got to watch your back anywhere you go," Allen said. "Stuff like that, just try to stay out of the way hopefully."
The police did not find a victim. Investigators say a man showed up at the Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound.
Audrey Leggett said she heard the person accidentally shot himself.
"It was a man, they say he sat down wrong and he shot himself," Leggett said.
No matter what happened, people at the park think guns and parks are not a good idea.
"I think it's totally inappropriate. He endangered a lot of innocent lives by doing that," Leggett said.
It is legal in Tennessee to carry a gun in a park if you have a permit.
