MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 13-year-old drowned at the L.E. Brown community pool in the 600 block of South Orleans Street Sunday afternoon.
MPD said four children climbed the fence of the community center. While there, the 13-year-old jumped in the pool, where he was unable to stay afloat.
Memphis Fire Department pulled the boy out of the pool and took him to LeBonheur Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"I went to the gate and you could see it clear as daylight," Ke-Erinie King said. "His shadow is at the bottom of the water."
King was at the scene and called 911 for the victim.
"It was a sad moment, because I can't swim, so I couldn't help him. And the people who were around couldn't help him either," King said.
King said the victim was with his younger brother and two cousins, none of whom could swim.
Police said the three boys ran to a fire department to get help while the teen struggled in the nine feet of water.
Fire officials pulled the victim out, but it was too late.
"That hurt his little brother," King said. "Because his little brother walked past crying. He was like 'He died; he died.' They knew, I mean, he was sinking. Like they knew he wasn't breathing. The water wasn't moving. So he knew he was gone. What scares me the most was my little brother does the same thing all the time."
