BATESVILLE, MS (WMC) - Batesville Elementary School caught on fire Friday evening.
Chopper 5 circled the scene where flames shot high out of the school. Fire crews shot water into the building from ladders, but the fire continued to burn.
According to the Batesville Sheriff's Department, the cause of the fire was most likely electrical.
The building is a total loss. No one was inside at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
"All the teachers have been here working trying to get ready, and I know they have a lot to get done in the next month now," Batesville city councilman Teddy Morrow said.
Despite the building's destruction, those involved said they are just happy the fire did not start during the school year while children were inside the building.
Morrow said there is not enough time to rebuild the school before the year begins, so the city will need to find a new location to host classes.
