MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - It's an important day for Memphis healthcare in the Mid-South.
Methodist Lebonheur Healthcare has a new collaboration with a worldwide leader in medicine: the Mayo Clinic.
"It means that Mayo Clinical network is bringing benefits of Mayo and expertise close to home, decreasing the need for patients to head out of Memphis," Michael Ugwueke, Chief Operating Officer of Methodist Lebonheur Healthcare said.
The Mayo Clinic chose Methodist and Memphis over Nashville, Jackson, Mississippi and Little Rock. For the group, the quality of care and location were key.
The relationship is a one-year agreement with a renewal option after every year.
This agreement will allow Methodist doctors and physicians to consult electronically with some 4,000 Mayo physicians and researchers, enhancing care for everyone, like those fighting cancer.
"Now I can afford patients regardless of their ability to pay and regardless of their ability to travel a second opinion from one of the best centers in the world about the oncology treatment," Dr. Kurt Tauer of West Clinic said.
Providing high quality healthcare in the Mid-South, with the Mayo Clinic, seems like the right fit.
