MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man was shot and killed in a Memphis apartment complex Sunday before noon.
The shooting happened in the Prescott Place Apartments located in the 1700 block of Morlye Street.
When police arrived, they found a man on the ground, dead from a shooting. His identity has not been released.
Witnesses told police they saw two men driving away in a white car.
Neighbors said a man returned from getting groceries to find two men in his apartment's parking lot. They said the victim went up the stairs to his home and was approached by the men, who demanded he open the door and tried to rob him.
When he refused, they pointed a gun at him and when he still refused to open the door, they shot him.
Neighbors said it didn't end there. Those who heard the gunshots tried to block the entrance to the complex so the robbers could not leave.
That is when they said the men began shooting at them.
Neighbors on Prescott street said they have had enough. They said on a daily basis, gun shots ring through the streets. They said seeing their neighbor dead on the staircase in this apartment complex has pushed them to demand change.
"There needs to be more police and more help for the Hispanic community," a neighbor said. "I'm not seeing equal community, and we are all equal."
They have also said they are calling on mayor A C Wharton to help, stop cutting police officer funds and increase the police presence in the neighborhood.
"Black lives matter. White lives matter. Hispanic lives matter, but the city has different priorities then the safety of the city."
