MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A woman was shot five times after she refused sexual advances from a man she received a ride from.
The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Heistan Place on September 5.
First responders found the woman lying on the ground shot several times. She told police she was offered a ride by a man known only to her as "Tyrone" in the 2500 block of Rammesses Avenue.
Tyrone offered to take her to Walmart to buy diapers for her baby. He then drove to South Memphis where he pressured her for sex.
The woman said when she refused, Tyrone drove her to Heistan Place and said 'This is your stop.' When she got out of his truck, Tyrone shot her five times in the thigh, pelvis, and upper back and drove away.
With the help of police, the woman later identified Tyrone 34-year-old Demarcus Woods.
A witness, who did not want to be identified, said she heard the victim screaming for help and she came around the corner to find her lying on the sidewalk.
"She was bloody. She didn't have any energy to go on; she lost a lot of blood."
Witnesses said when the woman saw a light on in a nearby business, she began banging on the door to get help. When no one answered, she collapsed.
"I guess she thought someone was there. That's how I heard her saying 'Help me; help me.'"
Her friend Christopher Graham said she was originally at his home when Tyrone picked her up. He said he did not hear about the shooting until the next day.
She described on Facebook that she had to get three blood transfusions and still has a bullet in her back. She has since been released from the hospital.
"I don't look at it as being a hero or anything," a witness said. "I was just coming to a woman's aide who was in distress."
Neighbors in the area, however, said this shooting still has them on edge.
Woods was arrested and charged with attempted murder. on September 12. His bond is set at $5 million.
