MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The Mid-South rumor mill is churning.
The Memphis Tigers play Ole Miss on October 17 at the Liberty Bowl. As of right now, both teams are undefeated at 4-0.
ESPN will not make a decision until closer to game time, but the game could be a prime candidate for the popular Saturday morning show, especially if both teams are able to remain undefeated until then.
ESPN has already had a whiff on Tigers football this season, when their game against Cincinnati received a prime time Thursday night slot on the network. Memphis won that thriller in a shootout, 53-46.
College Gameday's presence in Memphis would be unprecedented, as it has never come to the Bluff City. Last year, the show appeared in Oxford, Mississippi, and Starkville, Mississippi, for the first time each. The crew was in the Magnolia State for Mississippi State vs Auburn and Ole Miss vs Alabama, respectively.
Memphis hopefuls should keep expectations calm, however, as there are several other locations that could be prime choices for College Gameday, including Florida vs LSU, Michigan State vs Michigan, West Virginia vs Baylor, and Alabama vs Texas A&M.
But, if both teams remain undefeated and the Tigers are ranked going into the matchup, the game could be just intriguing enough for the network to make an appearance.
Last year, the Rebels defeated the Tigers, 24-3, in Oxford.
This week, the Tigers play South Florida Friday night. Ole Miss goes into the Swamp to play Florida Saturday night.
