MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police are searching for a murder suspect they said shot his ex-girlfriend and killed her on Tuesday, December 29.
On December 29, officers responded to a shooting in the 6000 block of Water Stone Oakway at 7:15 a.m.
Officers arrived and found the victim, 26-year-old Lakeyel Hurd, unresponsive. She had been shot. Paramedics pronounced her dead on the scene.
Police said their preliminary investigation revealed Hurd's ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Antonio Davis, kicked in the door and forced his way inside the home. Once inside, the suspect shot the victim multiple times.
According to police, Davis ran from the scene before police arrived and he remains at large.
A warrant for first-degree murder has been issued for his arrest.
Davis has a violent past and was recently released on probation for assaulting another woman less than a year before investigators said he killed Hurd.
"I couldn't imagine a man doing something like that to his wife or anything or his girlfriend especially when if you call yourself loving them. There shouldn't be anything going on," neighbor LeMarcus Calvin said.
In 2013, he was accused of brutally touting his then girlfriend for hours and threatening to burn her alive. More information later came to light suggesting the woman exaggerated what happened. So, courts decided to release him on parole after taking a plea deal in January 2015.
"He forced me in a closet where he poured lighter fluid all over me. Told me he was going to set me on fire," survivor Sheena Robinson said.
