MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Schools reached a formal agreement with district charter schools.
According to SCS board members, the district accepted a charter compact Tuesday night. The agreement sets out the relationship SCS will have with independent schools.
Supporters said that until now, the two groups only communicated to the extent required by law.
"What we see it as the board saying, 'yes we recognize we have charter schools in our landscape. They are a growing part of the district. They are an important part of the district, and we have to interact with them,'" Memphis director of Stand for Children Cardell Orrin said.
The compact requires more transparency and accountability on both sides of the agreement. An advisory committee will also make an action plan to put the agreement into effect.
