MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The man police said accidentally shot a teenage mother holding an infant now faces criminal charges.
Police said the 16-year-old was holding her one month-old in her arms when she was shot in the stomach.
She remains hospitalized at Regional Medical Center.
Police charged 20-year-old Jeffrey Gray with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a firearm.
According to the affidavit, Gray admitted he was "fumbling around with the gun" before it fell on the floor and "fired one shot, hitting the victim."
Neighbors said people should be more careful with guns.
"It shouldn't be in there," neighbor Antonishia Maxwell said.
The accidental shooting comes a month after 13-year-old LeTara Jones was killed in a similar incident.
Police said she was holding a three month-old baby when a stray bullet fired from another apartment struck her and grazed the child.
Her death inspired at least one rally seeking an end to gun violence.
A federal government study found that most unintentional shooting deaths and injuries could be prevented with proper handgun training and appropriate safety devices.
But neighbors had their own advice.
"Not to have them unless they are put up in a safe place. If you're not licensed for it, you don't need it anyway," neighbor Dreka Benson said.
