MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A person was killed after being hit by a train, according to Memphis Police Department.
The train collided with the person at the corner of McLemore Avenue and Dunnavant Street. According to neighbors, the area has a high volume of foot traffic and in the past, they have seen people try to run and beat oncoming trains.
"Everyday going to work," Patrice Berry said.
Berry walks over the tracks routinely on her way to and from work.
Police said the person was dead when they arrived at the scene.
"It is scary to find out someone has been hit by a train," Berry said.
The area where investigators were gathered is just feet away from the railroad crossing and warning system.
"They give us the horn blowing off the warning to stop and cease and don't stop on the tracks, but if you are trying to beat it, you are actually playing Russian Roulette with your life," Berry said.
Berry and other neighbors said they have seen drivers and even people walking attempt to beat an oncoming train in the past.
"A car was like inches from it and it beat it," Berry said. "But everyone is not so lucky."
Now they are just hoping everyone will use extreme caution when crossing the tracks in the future.
"Be a lesson learned not to cross the tracks when you hear the warning sounds going on and the lights flashing," Berry said.
Police are still investigating to determine why the person did not stop at the railroad crossing before being hit and killed. They have not released any information regarding the individual killed.
