MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man who chased down his ex-girlfriend and tried to kill her was sentenced to 16 years in prison, according to Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Vernon Walton will serve at least 85 percent of his 16-year sentence.
Walton pleaded guilty to shooting his ex-girlfriend, Monique Smith, five times at a vigil for a Ridgeway High School basketball player in 2013.
Investigators said Walton followed Smith to the vigil at Halle Stadium where she was supposed to meet her sister.
Walton walked up to Smith's car and opened fire. When Smith tried to escape out the passenger side of the vehicle, Walton walked around the vehicle and continued shooting.
Doctor's said Smith had 14 entry and exit wounds from the shooting. She spent a month in the hospital, but survived. She continues to receive treatment and still has two bullets lodged in her body.
