Student dies following shooting near LeMoyne-Owen

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man died following a shooting near LeMoyne-Owen College.

LeMoyne-Owen identified the victim as a student, but did not identify that student. They emphasized the incident did not happen on the school's campus.

According to police, the man was found with a gunshot wound in the 800 block of Saxon Avenue. The man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died.

Witnesses told officers they heard gunshots in the area and saw a man running down the street on Saxon, where he fell to the ground.

Friends said the victim is 21 years old.

There is no suspect information available at this time.

This shooting is the second near the campus in recent months. In September, a former student was shot in a dorm parking lot. Police said the 20-year-old was sitting in a car with the suspected gunman. As he got out of the car, the suspect shot him several times.

LeMoyne-Owen College released the following statement Wednesday:

"LeMoyne-Owen College is cooperating with the Memphis Police Department in response to a public safety incident that occurred off campus involving a current LeMoyne-Owen College student. The student was shot near Saxon and Mississippi streets. Facts are still being verified. Our top priority remains the safety and security of our campus community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and his family."
