Neighbors wash blood from porch after Navy veteran shot, killed
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Navy veteran was shot and killed in the 2200 block of Lucy Avenue early Monday morning. The shooting brings the city's total number of homicides to 222 for the year.
The man, who lived in the apartment complex, was killed on a front porch. Although there have been other homicides in the area, neighbors said they are still shocked because the man was nice. They said he was an older man who kept to himself.
Family and friends said Frank Sanders was a Navy veteran in his 50s. Neighbors were forced to wash blood from their front porch after Sanders was shot and killed.
One grandmother tried to get all the blood washed from her porch before her grandchildren saw it.
"I got the blood up so far," she said.
According to the woman, she said police told her it looked like Sanders may have been knocking on her door for help after he was shot.
"I'm scared for myself. They will hurt me too," the woman said.
With small children to take care of, she said the murder is a reminder to keep the door locked.
"I close my door in the evening at 6:30. My door is closed," she said.
She said she does everything she can to keep her grandchildren safe.
"I tell them if they hear anyone knock, don't come to this door, come to me," she said.
No arrests have been made in this case. No suspect information has been released.
