Bought milk in TN? You're owed cash back
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Any Tennessean who bought milk in the last 14 years is eligible to get money back.
Tennessee is one of 15 states (and the District of Columbia) involved in a class action lawsuit against milk producers.
The lawsuit accused milk producers of price-fixing. Instead of taking the case to court, the milk producers settled the case for $52 million. The settlement claims farmers were prematurely killing cows in order to raise the price of dairy products.
To be part of the settlement, you have to live in one of the 15 states and have bought a milk product (milk, half & half, cream cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, yogurt or cream) at a grocery store or other retailer.
"Milk is very expensive. Like, almost up to $4.50 a gallon," Dana Tate, a mother of four, said. "It's very expensive when I go to the grocery store. So, I sometimes have to limit their intake of the milk."
Dana Tate and Kametria Smith are just two of the individuals who have already signed up to receive a part of the $52 million dollars.
How much money you get back depends on how many people enter the pool to receive benefits. Estimates suggest individuals will receive between $45-70.
According to the website, it's easy to claim your cash. All you have to do is go online, fill out the form, then click to submit your claim. However, even with the settlement, Smith and Tate said more needs to be done to protect dairy customers.
"Overcharging for milk. Milk is very important for children," Smith, a mother of three, said. "We should be able to afford it, and it's not fair."
Tate agrees and said the prices need to come down.
"Maybe lower the prices, make it more affordable for families that are large in size or just families period," Tate said.
You must fill out this form before January 31, 2017 in order to be eligible for the money.
