City Council approves ‘Share the Pennies’ change to MLGW bills

City Council approves ‘Share the Pennies’ change to MLGW bills

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis City Council passed a measure that will enroll every Memphis Light Gas and Water customer into the Share the Pennies program.

Share the Pennies program allows MLGW to help poor, older, or disabled customers make repairs to boost energy efficiency.

Customers enrolled in the program have their MLGW bill rounded up to the nearest dollar. That extra change goes to MLGW and is earmarked for weatherization changes.

MLGW said its current weatherization budget is $50,000. The proposed expansion of the program is expected to increase that budget to $1.5 million.

Now that the measure has passed city council, it heads to the MLGW Board.

If approved, the city will embark on a six-month period where the Share the Pennies program and the change to opt every customer into the program is extensively publicized.

Anyone who does not want to be part of the program will have the option to opt-out of it. Customers who fail to opt-out, but choose not to participate after seeing the change in their bill, will receive a six month grace period that will allow them to get their change back.
