SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Sheriff's Office is utilizing everything they have in order to search for a missing 63-year-old man.
John E. Shields was last seen in his apartment near Hacks Cross Road and Highway 385 on Monday.
SCSO launched a massive search operation that includes deputies, ATVs, K-9 officers, and drones. Tuesday night, they brought in a helicopter equipped with an infrared camera to help with the search.
"We're looking for shapes, forms--we have infrared that we're using," Kerry Sterk said. "We also have a live camera stream that we're using."
Sterk is with 901 Drones and is assisting the sheriff's department in the search for Shields.
Shields has dementia and will become diabetic without his medication.
"His last insulin shot was at 10 a.m. He takes insulin shots three times a day," SCSO public information officer Earle Farrell said.
Shields lives with his wife in the apartments near Hacks Cross. Investigators said his wife took out the garbage Monday morning and when she came back, he was gone. It appears he walked away. That's something he did several weeks ago. He was later found in Collierville that time.
"They found him at Forrest Hill Irene and Dogwood," Farrell said. "A passerby saw him sitting in a ditch and said 'do you need some help?' He said yes," Farrell said.
When he went missing previously, he had been gone only a few hours before he was located. This time, he has been gone since Monday morning.
The current search is focused around Cameron Brown Park and the Wolf River in Germantown.
Law enforcement ended the search after 9 p.m. Tuesday. They will continue the search again Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
