Shelby County Chief Public Defender Stephen Bush steps down

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - Shelby County Chief Public Defender Stephen Bush has announced he is stepping down.

Bush has worked in the office 27 years and was appointed chief public defender in 2010.

In his retirement letter, he said his plan was to stay until Mayor Mark Luttrell finishes his term, which ends August 31.

He also praised his colleagues, saying in part:

I will depart knowing that the work continues and that it continues in the hands of some of the best and most dedicated professionals in the nation. I will watch the next chapters of our law firm with great hope, cheering each of you from the sidelines, and expecting the legacy of our storied one-hundred-year history to continue as you step forward daily on behalf of our clients.

He did not say what's next after retirement.
