The 49th annual FedEx St.Jude Classic is in the books. Unlike recent years, the tournament was still up for grabs at the turn, with 6 players within a stroke of the lead. The day started with a two-way tie between between Tim Herron and Tom Pernice at 7 under. Herron faltered on the front with 3 bogeys to fall out of the lead. Pernice was steady, he dropped a stroke but still maintained a share of the lead thru 14 with Jeff Maggert. He wound up 2nd at 6 under par.
1996 champion John Cook stayed in the mix, finishing tied for 3rd, at -4, plus 1 on the day. Nick Price, a two time champ at Southwind played what was most likely his last tournament here. He started the day with an outside chance 4 stokes back and finishes 3 over today to tie for 16th. He is headed for the Senior tour next year. Another 2-time champ, David Toms, couldn't come up with the Sizzling Sunday we're used to. He 3 putted 18 and tied for 10th at 1 under.
The day belonged to 46 year old Jeff Maggert. He eagled 16, then birdied 17 to take command of the tournament on the final holes. He posted a final round 65 to win by 3 strokes over Pernice at 9 under par. Maggert wins for the 3rd time in his career, the first since time since 1999, 3 strokes better than Tom Pernice.
