Northwest, striking mechanics to resume talks

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) - The union representing Northwest Airlines mechanics who've been on strike since last August says contract talks will resume August 15th.

But Northwest says any potential settlement with the mechanics' union would not impact mechanics who now work for Northwest. Northwest says the union asked for the bargaining session and airline officials agreed.

The airline has passenger hubs in Minneapolis, Memphis and Detroit. Most of the striking mechanics have lost their jobs to permanent replacement workers hired by Northwest.

There have been no talks since November. Northwest has ratified agreements on permanent wage and benefit cuts with pilots, ground workers and smaller unions, and flight attendants are voting on a tentative agreement reached with Northwest earlier this month.
