MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former Memphis Tiger basketball star and former NBA player Penny Hardaway is donating $1 million to the University of Memphis, school Athletic Director R.C. Johnson announced Thursday.
The money - the largest single donation ever made by a former Tiger athlete to the athletic department - will be used to construct a Tiger Sports Hall of Fame, which will be connected to the Athletic Office Building at the corner of Southern and National.
The hall of fame will be named after Hardaway.
Hardaway, a former Treadway High School star, is considered one of the greatest players to ever wear a Memphis uniform. He played for the team from 1991 to 1993, leading them to an NCAA Elite 8 appearance.
A First Team All-American, Hardaway went on to earn millions in the NBA as a gold medal in on the USA Olympic basketball team.
Also at Thursday's press conference, Johnson said Hardaway would become the school's 34th ambassador.
