Man crashes stolen truck into Memphis McDonald's

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The McDonald's on Mendenhall now has an extra drive thru - one located right through the dining room.  According to police, a man attempting to steal a safe early Tuesday morning backed a stolen truck into the restaurant, leaving a huge mess behind.

Just before 3:00am Tuesday, the suspect, James Norman, backed a stolen Fastenal truck slammed into the side of the restaurant. Norman then fastened a chain to the safe in the restaurant's office, trying to steal it.

Unfortunately for Norman, an alarm brought police to the restaurant's parking lot within seconds.

"They observed him, gave chase, and after a short foot chase, apprehended the suspect," Lt. Col. M.D. Jones of the Memphis Police Department said.

Norman soon found himself in jail, charged with theft and burglary.

Investigators said surveillance cameras captured video of the burglary attempt, but they do not have it yet because crews are having a hard time getting to the tape recorder.  The recorder was buried in the collapse.

Managers said the restaurant will be closed at least two days.  No money was taken during the attempted smash-and-grab.
